Gmail: real or fake?

I was sent a link to Google's new gmail service last night, which I assumed was fake, both by the details and the date it was released (think "pigeon rank").

But then Gothamist linked to a NYTimes article that seems to be taking it seriously.

1.) Is it all just an elaborate multi-party April Fool's hoax that everyone is participating in?
2.) Is it an AF hoax that Google has done that has caught both Gothamist and NY Times in its net?
3.) Is it real?

I'm inclined to think 1 or 2, but theoretically, it's possible it's real.  There's nothing overly ground-breaking about the service, so it _could_ be real.
