Kiki's Delivery Service

I saw Kiki's Delivery Service (Majo no takkyubin) tonight, compliments of Netflix.

I know this is heresy to even suggest it, but the damn movie was boring. I've got no doubt that the original version is probably a little better, but there just wasn't much to it. I will also admit that I was damned tired and having trouble keeping my eyes open from the start, but the movie is slow, and uneventful, and I had no luck relating to any of the characters. The voices didn't help - the voice work was, in my humble opinion, awful.

I had high hopes for it - after all, it was a Miyazaki film, and it had a (theoretically) great cast of US actors - Janeane Garofalo, Phil Hartman, especially, should've been good. Maybe it was because they were just doing a rote job re-recording a soundtrack, maybe it was because they were trying to force their speech to line up with the lip motions of the Japanese animation, maybe it was because they were directed by Miyazaki, who apparently couldn't even speak any English at the time (can he now?).

Whatever it was, the voice acting was terrible and the movie was boring. I really didn't care for it at all. Bah.
