Easy, you just call in and close it once it's been paid off. Ok, that's fine. I asked if I could "lock down" the account so no further charges could be posted. The answer: no. Is there anything I can do to make sure it doesn't get any further charges? Nope. I asked how long it'd take to post the credit against my account once the check arrived. She said "same day". I didn't believe her. I also couldn't believe her attitude (obviously wanting me off the phone - and this is a manager) and the fact that she didn't even bother to ask why I was canceling the card.
I can't believe how little MBNA cares about its customers, or to put it a different way, about getting money from us. I have a huge (huge!) available credit line through them, and they've been raising it every month for the past few months in an attempt to lure me back in. I was rather hoping she'd ask why I was canceling, so I could tell her that it was two things: their ridiculously bad interest rates, and their pathetic customer service. But she robbed me of the opportunity!
Oh well. If all goes well in a few days it'll be closed and that'll be the end of that long, unpleasant relationship. Bastards.
