I'm not sure if it's true. It might be, but it sounds a little over the top. On the other hand, you never know.
I will say this, though - the fact that it's even potentially possible, and that the PATRIOT act is real and not some sick joke - well, that makes me sick. I really love this country, but some of the things I see around me disgust me. I don't like it when my own country disgusts me. That's wrong.
Having said that: I realize that even with the current state of affairs, we still have it better than the vast majority of the world. I've got a job I like, in a city I love, two wonderful children, decent health, and a very comfortable lifestyle. I'm not denying any of that, I'm just really sad that the ideas this country was founded on are getting warped and ignored, whether for our "safety" or any other reason.
"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
-- Benjamin Franklin
"Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves."
-- William Pitt, The Younger
"The Constitution, as the fearful constantly remind us, is not a suicide pact. But neither is it a mere handbill, to be tossed away at the slightest inconvenience to the government's lawyers. Cutting corners no doubt makes the job easier for the government, but making the government's job easier is rarely a priority. Preserving the Constitution, fighting off the nibblers and chippers, even nibblers and chippers with good intentions, was once regarded by conservatives as the first duty of the citizen. It still is."
-- Wesley Pruden
Etc. etc. etc. You get the idea. G'nite.
