Oscar wrap up

Hmmmm. That wasn't particularly exciting.

So my main comment for the night is this: the women up on stage all looked like they've been binging and purging for weeks leading up to this. It really doesn't make sense to me - so many of them are just god-damned beautiful when left to their own devices, but then they have to screw it up by dropping more weight than they should so they actually look worse. Look, I'm not one of those guys who's into fat chicks or anything, but what so few women seem to realize is that being too skinny is just as bad. Every woman (every person, for that matter, I s'pose) has an appropriate body weight, and going above or below that only detracts from the look. Even Salma Hayek, who for quite a while I considered one of the hottest women on the planet (ok, I still do, I guess, but she's not the hottest), looked like she had shed a few pounds too many in anticipation of presenting tonight. You'd think if anyone understood that dieting your curves away is a bad thing, she would.

Anyways. I suppose I have to see Million Dollar Baby now - it's gotten so many raves and now won so many awards, I have to see what the fuss is all about. I thought Mystic River was totally overrated, and Tim Robbins performance in it totally overrated as well, so I didn't rush out and see MDB despite it looking pretty decent.

Also, Sean Penn sounded totally stoned off his ass up there. But from what I've heard of him in other places, that may just be the way he always is. (Of course, whether that means it's natural for him to talk like that or he's just always stoned, I dunno.)

Does anyone know who the women with Sidney Lumet were? His daughters and wife?

Oh, and I felt sort of bad for Don Cheadle - whether or not he deserved it, you could see how obviously disappointed he was to have lost the Oscar. But oh well, such is life.

(Examples of the starving-actress look:
Charlize Theron, aka Skeletor: http://www.oscar.com/oscarnight/redcarpet/34550.html
(Beyonce actually looked pretty good, so I'll skip past her...)
Renee Zellwegger, ewww: http://www.oscar.com/oscarnight/redcarpet/34552.html
Salma Hayek, sigh: http://www.oscar.com/oscarnight/redcarpet/34547.html
Laura Linney, (eeek!): http://www.oscar.com/oscarnight/redcarpet/34496.html

The combination of Laura Linney and Renee Zellwegger will be giving me nightmares for weeks, I think. God.

In other fashion news, heh, Johnny Depp and his date (wife?) totally went for the goth couple look. http://www.oscar.com/oscarnight/redcarpet/34565.html Rawk.)
