AAAAARGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, I'm better now. Excuse me for the whining and waxing melodramatic, life was just bumming me out for a bit. I'm all better now, no, really. Honest. Shut up with your wisecracks, it'll be at least 10 or 15 minutes before I start up again, that's something at least.

LOL

Man, this is awesome. Got my daily email from Astrocenter (I subscribed a few weeks ago, because I never remembered to check my horoscope and I enjoy reading the bullshit).

Today you could be in the mood to make some new friends, Nicholas. A social, playful energy could be in the air. You might circulate amongst coworkers in a different department, and take some time to get to know these strangers. Or you might strike up a conversation with somebody interesting on the phone over the course of the day. You might exchange phone numbers and plan to get together for dinner or lunch one day.

That's obviously full of shit because I'm never sociable. So scratch that.

Then the "premium questions".

If I meet someone special now, will the relationship last?

[Forget it!] It's clearly the wrong day to begin a relationship. The Moon/Venus quincunx often brings about uncertainty and self-doubt. How about taking up a new hobby?

How will the planets influence my interactions with my colleagues?

[Poor] Chances are you'll be in a very bad mood at work. The Moon opposite your Natal Sun brings a dissonance that could cause confrontation and delicate situations for you. It's not worth trying to forge ahead at all costs - you're swimming against the tide!

How will the planetary movement affect the relationship with my children?

[Not so good] Today, the effect on your relationship is not really positive. The Moon could have a slightly disharmonious effect and might hinder progress, especially with regard to relationships. Being a parent is sometimes challenging!

Heh. So basically if I go out I'll meet someone new, but every relationship I have is going to be going through a rough spot, and not only will my relationship with my peers and friends and coworkers and children go to hell but I'll fuck up any relationship I get into. So... why exactly should I exchange phone numbers and plan to get together with them? :P

Horoscopes are funny, especially when the various aspects of them coming from the SAME PLACE aren't even consistent. Gives me a shitload of confidence in them. :)

Going to my biorhythm page, I can see that my physical and emotional curves are tightly linked but my intellectual curve is diametrically opposed to them - so basically when I'm feeling good physically and emotionally I'll be dull mentally and vice versa. Nice. Still, judging by it, in a few months they should slowly slide into alignment, and I guess according to it I'll have a bunch of really good days and then of course they'll slide out of alignment again. Bummer.

This stuff is cheesy but I will admit I read 'em anyways. I go looking for parallels in my life but they're so rarely accurate that it's quite obvious they're full of shit, but I persist anyways. They're good for entertainment value I s'pose.

The Sisters of Mercy rock.

I love the SOM. They're just so damn awesome. I saw them play live a few years back in NYC. That was really cool. They're one of the first goth bands I really got into, along with Fields of the Nephilim and Miranda Sex Garden (and if you count it as goth, and I don't, NIN).

My musical choice was fairly narrow for quite a while. I never was a big radio listener, and even then most radio stations tend to have narrow playlists anyways. I never watched MTV or VH-1 much, which would've at least broadened my horizons by showing me the full gamut of popular music, if not all of the good music (by far) that's out there. So for a long time I focused on a few artists and listened to them a lot, and since I had little money listened to the same songs over and over again.

When I got into goth music the same was true for a while. Since then, I've discovered the joys of mp3's, and now while I still have no good way of getting introduced to good music, I do at least have way of getting at it once I've discovered it.

What's the point of this post? That the SOM rock and I'm overtired. Word.

The joys of running a big site

So someone made a change to put up a new promotion on Tuesday. No big deal, right? The problem is with this new promotion everytime someone read a note on BP they'd get a flash popup. That flash popup was 87k. Just -today- (i.e. in 11 hours) we had over 25g of downloads of that stupid flash file. It increased our peak bandwidth usage by over 15 mbps. That's over 10 t1's worth of data getting pumped out, all that one stupid file.

Here's a fun image of what happened after we found it and took it down:

Note: That's not our total bandwidth, incidentally, just for that one cluster of servers. We push close to 200 mbps at peak.

Important read for Hotmail and other Passport users

Microsoft's crappy Passport "technology" was cracked. Anyone with a Hotmail account can have all of their personal info that Passport holds (including address, phone, credit card, etc. if you put it in) read simply by opening an email. No big shocker, it was going to happen sooner or later, but now that it's officially happened it's time to start being extra 'specially careful.

Read more here:

GO MICROSOFT!

(Thanks to chumducky for the link.)

Update: Ok, they took down the passport wallet stuff until they've gotten it fixed, so I guess it's more or less safeish, in the sense that it's disabled. Ahem.
