2 planes just took a nose dive, one crashed into each of the towers of the world trade center. This is NOT a joke, as much as it sounds like one. Holy fucking shit, is all I can say. There's a huge cloud of smoke around the tops of them. God damn.

Terrorist update

Ok. 2 separate planes were hijacked and rammed into the 2 towers of the World Trade Center almost simultaneously. In Washington, another (hijacked?) plane was rammed into the Pentagon. Fires are going on at the Washington Mall and possibly other places.

We heard a little while ago that the south tower collapsed. We all went outside to look. On the way out we passed one of the developers. He was outside when it happened and was in tears. He couldn't speak.

Outside there was nothing but smoke on the skyline where the WTC used to be. You can't see the buildings, just roiling smoke. People were in the streets staring in shock, some of them were crying.

I just talked to my brother in law over aim, he was outside and saw it. He's in tears now too.

I can't reach the daycare or school, the lines are busy. The tunnels are closed, the trains are shut down, I can't get out of the city right now to get home. My boss offered to drive me home if we can get to his place.

I feel sick.

People jumped out of the windows at the WTC before the towers collapsed. There are hoards of people walking and running across the bridges and up the street trying to get away from everything.

Both towers are down, they both collapsed, there's just empty space in the skyline and smoke all over.

I looked out the window and people were just running around in a panic in the streets. People are so stupid. We're 30 blocks away, 40 even maybe, we're as safe as can be considering, and people are panicking here.

A lot of people are freaking out, they had friends or family who worked in or near the WTC. I have a friend I can't reach, I only had his cell number, all cellular traffic is down or close to it since the major broadcasting point was from the top of the towers.

They're evacuating all of Manhattan south of Canal, and several other major buildings and sites. All public transportation is closed, the tunnels are closed too.

The pentagon was also hit by a plane, and part of it collapsed. The groundbreaking ceremony for the pentagon was 50 years ago today.

The CIA building, White House, and basically every other important building in Washington are being evacuated. A car bomb drove into one of the buildings, I forget which. A fire is going on at the Washington Mall.

Another plane crashed in western PA. No news on if it's related, yet.

I heard there's another plane en route to Washington. I hope they shoot it down before it can hit anything, if that is the case. Better to kill the people on board than to kill them plus hundreds or thousands more if they hit a target.

Heard Camp David might have been hit by another plane.

More, more, more... so much more to report, I can't keep up with all of it.

One of the planes was a 767, American Airlines Flight 11, hijacked on its way from Boston to LA. There were 158 people on board when it hit the WTC.

I was riding the bus this morning when the guy next to me shouldered me and pointed out the window. The towers were leaking smoke from a hole in the side. It didn't look that big. Then we heard as we got closer that it was a plane that hit it, people were whispering and looking out the windows.

Sorry, this is disjointed, I'm just spewing shit as I think of it or read it.

3 planes

3 planes identified so far, 2 american airlines, total of 156 people on those 2 flights (one pentagon crash and one wtc crash it looks like), one united airlines (the one in western PA). No identification of the other flights yet or any more passenger counts. sorry that 158 before was wrong, but I got it form the bbc

I saw some questions... it happened at around 8:40 and then then 2nd crash was a few minutes before 9. There were people in both buildings and on both flights when it happened, no exact counts yet though.

I'm trying to be as factual as possible but there are obviously a lot of rumors flying around, and some of what I post may be wrong. I've seen a lot of it first hand; I can tell you the info about the WTC is correct. The rest I've gotten from other people, the radio, online, etc.

All transportation is cut off as far as I can tell.

Saint Vincent's hospital is asking that all nearby burn specialists and plastic surgeons come in.

A group of coworkers are going to get together and walk down to the bridge and cross it on foot and try to make it back home. Lucky. It would take me all day and I don't even know the way, it'd be a 15 mile walk, give or take. I could do it if I had a good idea of how to get there, but I only know the way from the tunnel, and those are closed. I think there's one bridge to NJ that's still open to foot traffic but it's pointless to even try that I think. Looks like I'm stuck here for now. I'm thinking it might not be a bad idea to see if there are any hotel rooms still available, maybe get one and have everyone share it. Then again we're probably safer at work, and here I have internet access and a phone and water at least.

My dad's going to pick up the kids, they should be ok, but I still can't reach the daycare or school.

been reading news reports and listening to the radio and collecting images... tired. This is so sick.

People in the middle east are throwing celebrations. How charming. I hope they all die. Anyone who celebrates at something like this, no matter who it happens to, just does not deserve to live on the same planet as I do.

My brother in law is going to try to go downtown and help. I'm tempted to join him but until I hear about my kids I don't want to move.

good lord

I just watched some live video footage... it's like being in the wake of a volcano, there's so much ash and dust around that everything is white, like being in a desert or something... it's not recognizable as the city.

This is so incomprehensible.

kids ok

My boss's mother was able to call through and get to the daycare and school, kids are ok, they know my dad's coming to get them, ok.

bye bye

Going downtown to see if I can help or give blood or something. Wish me luck. I'll post an update when I get back.

Well, I walked down to union square, stopped some doctors walking in the street and was told to head to Beth Israel on 17th and 1st. So I headed there, but they have so many volunteers they aren't accepting any more until tomorrow or the day after.

So I headed downtown to see if I could help. I got down to Houston street and was sent over to Pier 40. So I walked over there, to the command center, and was thanked but told that they had more than enough people (there were hundreds of cops there, plus guys in fatigues (looked like army) maybe even thousands) and that if I wanted to help I could try to call the Mayor's Office.

Now I'm going t ohave lunch then go uptown to 67th and 1st which is the only place still accepting blood.

Tired, just got back from walking fast nonstop since my last post. Gleh.

To continue my love/hate feelings towards my fellow new yorkers... while it's true there were so many people volunteering to give blood and so many cops that they werent' taking volunteers - which shows what this city can do when the people are motivated and inspired - but for every person giving blood or volunteering or whatever, there were 100 sitting around acting as if nothing happened, happening lunch, sitting and laughing and relaxing. It made me angry. I don't understand how people can just ignore it, even in NYC. I mean, yeah, we're the most jaded people in the world - I know that, and I love it most of the time - but sometimes, damnit, you have to stop ignoring the shit around you and do something about it.

Sigh. At least my kids are safe with my parents. I'll probably be stuck in the city until tomorrow at this rate. If I can't give blood or help tonight, then maybe tomorrow.

Almost done with lunch, then I think I'm going to head out again. Damnit. I can't believe how hard it is to give help.

Just talked to a friend who works near there - 4 blocks from the WTC. He said his coworkers saw body parts flying by and people jumping off the buildings.

He just got home after a few hours of trying, glad he's ok.

This is so insane.

7 WTC (World Trade Center building #7) is on fire and apparently took heavy damage and they're worried it might collapse too.

I used to work in 7 WTC.
