The 8 Worst Convenience Foods

8. Meeter's Kraut Juice (Stokely USA): Yes, that's sauerkraut juice, which is even worse than it sounds. The taste and smell can be a bit, well, harsh, but KJ is reputed by its fans to have certain medicinal benefits (as a source of vitamin C, cure for intestinal bugs, etc.), which adds up to a classic case of the cure being worse than the disease.

Mediaeval Baebes - So Treiben Wir Den Winter Aus

My pager (well, cell phone actually, I use text messaging to get my pages) has been going off continuously all night, with never more than a 30 minute break. That's just often enough to keep me awake. The funny thing is a bunch of them are back-pages that were never sent out earlier in the week. What fun!

I wonder sometimes if the universe hates me. :P

...some ass was launching a DoS against our nameserver for several hours but I passed out and didn't even notice the fucker until about 30 minutes ago because when I finally crashed last night, I crashed hard. Slept through a whole bunch of pages, although the dns server problems were the only important ones. Firewalled the stupid mofo off, nameserver is happy, all is good, pager is quiet.

Bleh. So tired... :(

I just rebooted the primary load balancer, taking down the whole network including all of our sites.

Now I'm going to get lunch.

Mmmm... food... (they can call me if the site stays down for too long. Weekends are low traffic anyways).

...well, maybe that wasn't such a good idea.

Although my boss suggested it.

For whatever reason, something has lost its mind and we've got a routing loop shutting down all outside connectivity to our sites. Fuck. So we've been down for, like, an hour. The reboot went fine, came up, and then BAM it all went down.

I dunno why. My boss doesn't know why. No one does.

I tried dialing into the cage but was getting 75% packet loss over the modem, essentially rendering me unable to connect to anything. BAH.

2 other admins are going in now to look at it.

Oh yeah...

...the problem was solved, finally, around 30 or 45 minutes ago. It was just the machine being weird, but it required a physical reboot to fix it. Oh well. It's not like we were down for almost 2 hours.

Oh wait...

My son is so cute.

He's asleep on my bed, while I sit here working. I wish I had a camera, I want to take a photo of him.

Oh wait, I do, just not a digital. Well, at some point I'll develop the roll and have fond memories.

I wasn't able to spend much time with either kid this weekend. :( Shitty weekend, on-call shit blowing up left and right. I'm really tired, too, things have been blowing up all week and I'm just feeling worn out. It seems like all of the big shit goes wrong when I'm on call. And, AND, if something big breaks when one of the junior guys is on call, they call me anyway. Damn.

I'm going to go get a little food in a minute to keep me going while I work.

Anyway I felt bad for not reading my son a bedtime story, or playing with him much this weekend, or anything, so I figured I'd let him read in my bed while I worked and at least have time near me if not actually actively with me. I know, it's sappy, but I know it makes him happier than being alone in his room (with his brother) and so I figured it can't hurt. I really love the two of them and wish I had more free time for them. Usually it's not so bad, but the past two times I've been on call have been horrendous. I think I'm going to see if I can get some help on the weeks I'm on-call - either hire a baby sitter on the weekends, or see if my parents will take them, or see if my wife will. It's not fair to the kids, I think, they need constant attention at their age, and while I try my best, when I'm on call, I'm not giving them constant attention. When I'm not on call, though, I do well. So it's ok I guess.

Need a little food then back to work and such.
